The shape of this unglazed bluff stoneware vase is an explicit reference to Roman classical art. The decoration uses both antique elements (faun heads, palmette fern leaves, three bearded faces between the belly and the foot), and other elements that belong to the Renaissance vocabulary (shells cast from nature, designs taken from gilt leather book binding). Stamped depressed motifs, applied moulded pads, dark clay inlays, constitute the rich decoration for this princely wheel-thrown object. H = 30 cm.
